Preliminary results from southern Sudan's referendum show that 99.5 per cent voted for independence from the north.

But there has already been backlash - a mutiny by Sudanese troops refusing to leave the south, has spread through several towns.

At least 50 people have been killed in the past four days.

Southern Sudan is set to become the world's newest nation on 9 July 2011.Its referendum was part of a deal to end decades of conflicts between north and south, driven by religious and ethnic divides.
