Brazil flood news :Floods and landslides devastated several mountain towns near Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, killing at least 257 people as torrents of water and mud swept through the region, burying many families as they slept. The heavy rains also killed 13 people in Sao Paulo state on Tuesday, bringing the total death toll in Brazil's south to at least 270. Hillsides and river banks in the pictures Serrana region north of Rio buckled under the equivalent of a month's rainfall in 24 hours, destroying.
Rescue operations in the area north of Rio known as the Serrana were suspended late on Wednesday because of darkness and dangerous conditions.Entire neighborhoods in the municipalities of Nova Friburgo, Teresopolis and Petropolis were swept away by rivers of mud and tumbling rocks.

At least three firemen were killed when they were engulfed in tons of mud as they tried to carry out a rescue.Rescue workers search for victims after heavy rains caused mudslides in Teresopolis. Three towns in the Serrana mountain region north of Rio were devastated as landslides destroyed homes, roads and power lines and buried families alive as they slept. Teresopolis, 62 miles north of Rio, was the worst hit town with 130 deaths recorded after hillsides gave way and a river burst its banks following the equivalent of a month's rainfall.
